What To Do If You’re the Victim of a Hit-And-Run

Being involved in a car accident is unfortunate and can often times be very traumatizing, especially if you are the personal injury victim of a hit and run. Hit-and-run collisions occur when the driver leaves the scene of the accident in hopes of avoiding any responsibility for the cause of the accident.

The Kentucky 2010 Traffic Collision Facts report shared that there were 11,038 hit-and-run collisions, of which 13 were fatal collisions and 960 were injury collisions.

If you are the victim of a hit-and-run follow these steps:

  • Call 911 – Always call 911 and notify the police of the hit-and-run accident first. If you require medical assistance it is important to notify the 911 dispatcher as well. Even though the other individual has already left the scene it is an offense for you to leave the scene as well. Involving the police right away will help to find the driver faster.
  • Take Pictures – As long as you are not injured it is important to take pictures of the hit-and-run accident so you can provide proof of the accident at later dates when it will be applicable. If you do not have a camera on hand use your camera phone if you have one.
  • Write Down Details – Write down the license plate number or any details you can remember from the hit-and-run vehicle. Also get the names and contact information for any witnesses who were at the scene of the hit-and-run.
  • Contact Your Insurance Company – Call your insurance company and let them know that you have been the victim of a hit-and-run accident. Also get the information that they will require from you for insurance purposes.
